I would firstly like to say that the course tutor was fantastic and made the lessons engaging and fun. If this review was just in relation to him, I would happily give 5 stars.

The problem I found was that the lesson lengths were simply too long. The concept of the course is that it is compressed learning - long lessons over a short length of time. Most BSL level 1 qualifications seem to be done over a school year - this is completed in 3 months. Therefore the lesson curriculum feels rushed and you reach the exams not really feeling prepared. 3 hours of intense learning is too much for the adult brain, especially if you have worked throughout the day.

In addition, we as a class raised a number of concerns with BSL First about the course which led to the company director joining one of our classes to talk about them. The way we were spoken to was abrupt, quite patronising and we did not feel helped or that our problems were solved. The attitude we were given left quite a negative taste to the course itself and led to most of us feeling that we would not do another course with this company.

I have not enrolled on another course with this company. As stated above, the tutor was really good, engaging and fun, but the concept of the course (in my own opinion) simply doesn't work. Lessons are too long - 2 hours of intense focus would be more than enough - and the length of the course doesn't allow for the sheer amount of content you need to learn.

I would recommend this tutor, but I would unfortunately not recommend the course itself, just based on my own experience.

This course, for me, was life-changing. Akbar, along with his team of brilliant Deaf and hearing tutors, supported me throughout my journey on the Heritage signers course from beginning to end. They helped me during the time I discovered my true passion and now I am thriving and love my career as a qualified RSLI. Forever grateful and would recommend to anyone!

An amazing course with a fantastic teaching team. The Moodle resources were so helpful with all the theory you needed to complete the various assignments. All the course content was relevent and useful for when I became freelance and has and will continue to support me through my career. Thank you BSL First 🙂

One of the most affordable BSL courses, particularly for online classes, that I could find. They include moodle page with lots of learning materials, 'dictionary', quizzes, comprehension videos and more. It was all fairly new from what I gathered and many glitches and things not quite lining up, but feedback was taken on board and encouraged to help improve the site. I did not end completing my course as I found it incredibly frustrating after having learnt BSL in Wales with Welsh accent, to be constantly corrected to an English accent. It is also very difficult to be staring at computer screen for 3h in a row (breaks were not often at regular intervals). I would genuinely encourage everyone to learn BSL in person if at all possible. If not though, their additional resources are very useful to revise in your own time.

I am currently studying with BSL first and I have completed 1 year studying with them. Very knowledgeable team with great teaching strategies. In 1 year alone they have taught me so much. I highly recommend BSL first.
