A nice small town feel to this rural community but with lots to do.
There are numerous cafes, restaurants, pubs, hotels and shops.
A great little place to visit.
The castle giving the town its name is hidden behind the Church on the main street.

Large ruin of a medieval castle, extensive remains of the outer curtain wall, and some of the inner buildings. There is plenty of room for kids to run around and the usual information boards. Has a small shop and toilet. There is no parking on site, but there plenty of parking in the town and relatively cheap.

Stopped off at Barnard Castle for a wander round. Had a delicious ice cream from an ice cream shop on the high street. Walked past the castle and along the river. We didn't go into the castle as I felt it was dear for what it was.
Found a great crazy golf area, and it was only £3 each to play, we haven't played for years, so we really enjoyed it.

Pretty views of the surrounding countryside from the castle. Not a great deal to see when we visited; although there are special events at particular times. Offer of free apples from the fruit trees. Friendly staff. No parking, but two hours free on street parking, or paid parking behind Yorkshire Trading Company. The castle was closed due to high winds the first time we tried to visit, so perhaps check before making a special journey.

Really pretty, small castle in a gorgeous setting over the Tees. There's not loads there, not a lot to explore in the outer area but the inner area near the keep is quite fascinating. You can go up a couple of the towers, get great views of the river, and also go into one of the moats. Price is a little steep maybe for what's there but for English Heritage members like me, I'd say worth a visit. It's also really worth a short walk down to the bridge over the Tees just a little way down for the best views of the castle.

Castle is intact with regards to walls, buildings are mainly ruins but is a very interesting place. Plenty of history here. On entry might not seem much but spend some time reading the history boards/ buy one of their Guide books. One of the most interesting ruins I have seen. Great place for the kids. Some supervision required for younger children required. Take a picnic if its a nice day. Some disabled access to grounds with assistance

Very good views from the outer walls, I recommend taking your time reading the plaques and allowing your imagination muscle to flex. Well worth joining english heritage. As you'll save the more castles you visit.
