Personally , I’ve only had good experiences at SOAS language centre ( Japanese ) and I feel a great deal of affection for the the university itself as I did my MA there some years ago . Admin at SOAS in general has always been a bit ropey , and particularly now with Covid making it almost impossible to communicate directly with someone it can be frustrating , but then speaking to friends at other institutions I can’t say they sound significantly better . I’m hoping in class lessons will resume for the Autumn term as I’m not keen on remote learning , online school with the kids was torture enough ! In all SOAS language language centre is a friendly , welcoming place with kind, dedicated teachers and I look to returning in the near future .

I used to attend sylheti classes held by a Marie Thaut who is member of staff at SOAS and uses SOAS’s emails and funding to run these classes. During the lesson she spouted Antisemitic and Islamaphobic comments which I complained to her about that it is wrong to be a teacher and say these things but she said “she does these lessons in her free time so it doesnt matter”. I complained to the uni as she has children and people of many faiths in these lessons so they could be subjected to these comments. However, I did not get any response from the university nor from the language department

I can't say I agree with the other one (negative) review at all. So much so, that instead of going home last thing on a Friday, I'm writing this.

I've overall found this place to be great. I dreamed of studying languages here and took Arabic and Chinese, and Russian around the corner at RLC and it was perhaps the most satisfying year of my life.

The teachers were so encouraging that I finished 8 years of courses in a year. Anne Campbell, the head, is past retirement age and I've seen her running around a lot in holding things together for us. There's a lot to be said for that. Romany Luckcock (organised Arabic classes for me) and Matthew Oryang (organised Chinese classes for me) fielded countless questions and have been extremely helpful.

I started Arabic with Mahsn Majidy, who is THE person you want to start learning Arabic with. Salah and Hasan are also great, very technical teachers.

For Chinese, I only remember my most recent teacher Mr. YueGang Jin, who is an awesome, fun, engaging teacher to have.

And, as students book up till the last minute, the team do an awesome job in accommodating us.

UPDATE (this para): Also, the review telling you to learn on YouTube instead of here is disrespectful and clearly doesn't know what he's talking about: I've studied 15 languages and the fact that I've come here and am not still on YouTube pretty much says it all. The group courses always have interesting people and are engaging.

My experience studying at the language centre has been nothing short of fantastic. The teachers are very supportive and go to a great deal of effort to ensure that students are on top of the material. Highly recommended.

I have taken Mandarin and Japanese classes online with Gao Hui and Hitomi Micallef and am extremely happy. (I hope they will keep the online courses in the future, as they are fantastic for those of us abroad). Highly recommended.

It’s amazing how bad this place is. The teachers don’t take the class seriously and don’t bother to prepare anything. We made absolutely NO progress in 10 weeks. A complete waste of money. They do SO many things wrong, for example waaaay too much teacher speaking time, no pair or group work for students. I complained twice and was offered no compensation. Really terrible course and bad customer service. They don’t even bother to reply to emails. I had heard it was bad but it was a joke. I got a student discount and it still wasn’t worth it. This is for Chinese, maybe other languages are different. I gave up and went to UCL for Japanese, where the teacher is great.

The courses are currently online only and via video conference. It’s extremely hard to learn a new language via video conference so I would not recommend to anyone. Just watch video on youtube for free and it will work the same or even better as you wont have 20 people peoples talking together with really poor audio quality.
